In December 2004, there was a hope and dream that came to birth.
Year after year, students with disabilities were not being successful in school. The Individualized education focus for these students was superseded by the drive for high “FCAT” Scores. As a Result, students were experiencing a lot of failure, dropping out of school or advancing within the school system without having the adequate reading or math skills to become productive and independent citizens.
There was a mission held by two ESE Teachers and it was to break the cycle and make a difference for these kids!
It was apparent, that these students needed to master the basic educational skills of reading and arithmetic. However, these skills alone couldn’t prove to provide security of a successful and productive future. It was at that point a vocational program was added to the academic design. The vocational component was created to teach the kids the skills to be successful on the job, while building their confidence and independence through hands on employment and internships. With the goal in sight of graduating students with adequate skills and full time employment in a career not just a job – Believers Academy was founded!
